No. 5 Women’s Soccer Team Advances to Region Finals with 2-1 Win over Hornets

Leah Czechowski scores tying playoff goal vs. Broome

The No. 5 Genesee Community College women's soccer team advanced to Sunday's Region-III Championships in Dryden, NY with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over visiting Broome Community College Oct. 25 in a playoff semifinal matchup.

Julie Kommer broke a 1-1 deadlock 24 minutes into the first half after corralling a 40-plus yard free kick from Diante Scheepers from the left side of the field.

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest before Leah Czechowski tied it up at 1-1 in the 18th minute. Katline Cartwright streaked down the right side and just as it appeared she would run out of real estate sent a cross pass to an awaiting Cartwright, who waisted no time in putting the ball into the back of the net.

Current National Junior College Athletic Association Goalkeeper of the Week Jaclyn Guzdek recorded three saves in the victory.

Genesee out-shot Broome 19-5 with 14 finding the net, while also holding the edge in corner kicks 6-4.

The Cougars' next opponent will be Mohawk Valley Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Dryden, with the winner advancing to the 2018 Women's Soccer D-III National Tournament.
