Lady Cougars’ Strong Second-Half Not Enough to Overtake Tribunes

Genesee's women's basketball team tips off against Monroe's

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team got within six and four points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, in their contest with visiting Monroe Community College. The Tribunes out-scored Genesee by 10 total points in the second half, but had built a bigger first-half  lead before finishing the game with a 99-61 win over the Cougars Nov. 29.

The Cougars kept both the final two quarters within two scores, and both teams were in the 50-percent range in shooting for the game with Monroe holding a 54-51 edge, but Monroe had 21 more basket attempts through aggressive play that led to 16 more steals than Genesee. Those combinations of scoring opportunities and takeaways ultimately became too much to overcome.

Genesee's best run came after a third quarter timeout, when the team went 10-1 midway through the third with a pair of threes from TaLia Burgess and a pair of buckets by Estella Anderson, who led the Cougars in points and rebounds with 22 and six, respectively.

Rosalyn Sealey added 14 points, while a pair of Cougars had eight points apiece in Jasmine Holmes and Burgess.

Genesee next travels to Villa Maria College Dec. 2 with a 2 p.m. start.
