Genesee Women's Swimming Earns Non-Scholarship National Championship

GCC Swimming takes Non-scholarship national championship

Genesee Women's Swimming and Diving team takes the Spyke Johnson Non-Scholarship National Championship Team Award for the 2022-2023 year. During the four-day tournament, the women's team was behind for the first three days and pulled it off on the last day. After day one, Genesee was in third place with 36 points and was 2 points behind Jamestown Community College and 13 points behind Monroe Community College. On the first day of the tournament, Jordyn Stachowiak placed 12th in the 1000yd freestyle, obtaining 5 points for the team, with a time of 12.12.32 and Ruth Metzger placed 14th in the 1000yd freestyle, obtaining 3 points for the women, with a time of 14.06.82. Alaura Rehwaldt, Ruth Metzger, Emma Corbett, and Jordyn Stachowiak got on the podium on day one for the 800yd freestylerelay in 5th place, obtaining 28 total points, with a time of 9.23.15.

On day two, Genesee was still in third place with 100 points, 14 points behind Monroe CC and 15 points behind Jamestown CC. The women's team (Quinn McCue, Bella Lamitina, Tatum Gagne, and Carly Burgess) started off the night by hitting the podium in the 200yd freestyle relay in 8th place with a time of 2.10.79 and gaining 22 points in total. Jordyn Stachowiak placed 11th in the 400yd IM with a time of 5.34.17 (6 points added) and Michaela Pantano placed 12th in this event with a time of 6.19.36, adding 5 points to the total. Alaura Rehwaldt gained 6 points for the team when getting 11th in the 100yd butterfly with a time of 1.04.00 and Emma Corbett placed 14th in this event with a time of 1.17.96, while obtaining 3 points. Genesee (Carly Barrett, Alison Jorolemon, Alaura Rehwaldt, and Jordyn Stachowiak) finished this night by getting on the podium again in the 400yd Medley Relay in 8th place with a time of 4.51.05, gaining 22 more points for the team.

On the third day, Genesee moved into the second place slot for the non-scholarship championship with 163 points. The women were 1 point ahead of Monroe and 19 points behind Jamestown. Alaura placed 7th in the 100yd IM with a time of 1.06.10 and gained 12 points for the team. Michaela placed 14th in this same event with a time of 1.16.03, gaining 3 more points. Ruth placed 12th in the 500yd freestyle with a time of 6.41.19 and added 5 points to the total. Jordyn placed 7th in the 200yd butterfly with a 2.43.72 time and 12 more points to the team. Michaela placed 9th in this event with a 3.07.29 time and added 9 more points. This evening was finished with Genesee (Alaura, Emma, Michaela, and Jordyn) on the podium in 8th place for the 200yd Medley Relay with a time of 2.09.27 and 22 points to the team score.

On the fourth and final day is when Genesee solidified the championship with 249 points total. Alaura placed 11th in the 50yd butterfly with a 27.88 time (6 points) and Michaela placed 15th with a 31.91 time, adding 2 points. Jordyn hits the podium in 6th place for the 1650yd freestyle with a time of 20.03.30 and adding 13 points for the team. Alison and Ruth also placed in this event as well. Jorolemon came in 9th with a 23.17.49 time and 9 points, while Metzger placed 10th with a 23.46.28 time and adding 7 points. Megan Rinker and Carly Barrett then approached the 1mtr diving board for our last individual event of the tournament. Megan placed 5th with a final score of 160.05, adding 14 points to the team's score, and Carly placed 6th with a 144.65, adding 13 points. The final event of the tournament was the 400yd freestyle relay. Jordyn, Emma, Ruth, and Alaura hit the podium one last time in 8th place with a time of 4.10.53 and added 22 points to the team's score.
