Mohawk Valley, NY ... In game 1, Genesee picked up a well-earned 3-1 win behind a complete-game effort from freshman pitcher Shelby Scharfen. Scharfen tossed all seven innings, allowing eight hits and just one earned run while striking out three. Her control in the circle kept the game steady, and she also helped her own cause with an RBI single in the top of the first.
Caitlin Ryan had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of strong defensive plays at shortstop. Kaylynn O'Connell added a hit and scored a run, while Sloan Jonathan drove in one with a groundout to cap the team's three-run first inning.
Though the offense quieted after the opening frame, Genesee's defense held strong. Maddie Hughson recorded three putouts in center field, and the team committed only one error overall.
In Game 2, Genesee couldn't recover from a big early inning by Mohawk Valley and dropped the contest 11-2. Caitlin Ryan provided the offensive highlight with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, accounting for both Cougar runs. Ashley Blair added a hit, while Kaylynn O'Connell and Maddie Hughson each reached base. Sloan Jonathan took the loss, and Ryan pitched in relief, striking out five over 4.2 innings. Despite the final score, the Cougars held their opponent scoreless over the third and fourth innings, showing flashes of strong defense.
They look to bounce back as they take things back home for a match up against Monroe University on Sunday, April 20th.
