CAMDEN, NJ...Softball came up short in their first game of the day, falling 7-1 to Camden County College. Despite Shelby Scharfen's complete game effort in the circle—where she gave up just four hits and two earned runs while striking out six—the Cougars couldn't overcome a tough second inning in which Camden scored six runs.
Offensively, Genesee managed four hits, with Kaylynn O'Connell going 2-for-3 including a double. Ashley Blair and Kiara van der Jagt added singles, with van der Jagt also swiping a base. Genesee's only run came in the sixth inning when Sloan Jonathan scored, but the team struggled to capitalize on baserunners, with three players caught stealing.
Although they didn't commit any errors and held Camden scoreless in five of six innings, the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
GAME 2:
The Cougars exploded for 13 runs on 19 hits in a high-scoring win over Camden County College on March 30. The offense was led by Shelby Scharfen, who went 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a home run, and Caitlin Ryan, who added 3 hits, including a triple and home run, and drove in 2 runs.
Every batter in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit, with Sloan Jonathan contributing 3 hits and an RBI. Kiara van der Jagt, Maddie Hughson, and Chloe Milles also had multi-hit games, while Desiree Zielinski and others added to the RBI tally. Genesee stole four bases, showing aggressiveness on the basepaths.
On the mound, Sloan Jonathan pitched a complete game, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits and striking out 5 over seven innings. Despite giving up a three-run homer to Camden's Halina Collins, Jonathan managed to limit further damage and keep Genesee in control.
Camden posted 13 hits of their own and rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, but Genesee's early seven-run lead proved too much to overcome. Camden committed five errors, which contributed to several of Genesee's scoring opportunities.
With no errors in the field and a balanced attack at the plate, Genesee secured a solid road win, capping off a strong performance in all phases of the game.
They look to shift momentum as they take on Monroe's Tribunes in an away double header on April 1st.
