SUMTER, NC... Softball took on Division I opponent USC Sumter for a double header on March 15th, splitting the day against the fire ants.
Game 1:
Genesee struggled to generate offense in a 9-1 loss to USC Sumter. The team collected seven hits, but scoring opportunities were limited. Shelby Scharfen drove in the only run, while Sloan Jonathan led the Cougars with two hits. Ashley Blair scored the lone run after reaching base in the first inning.
Defensively, Genesee recorded 14 putouts but had difficulty containing USC Sumter's offense. The Cougars left six runners on base and were unable to capitalize on scoring chances.
Game 2:
Genesee bounced back in Game 2 with a 7-0 shutout victory over USC Sumter. The Cougars jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the first inning, and never looked back. Kaylynn O'Connell led the offense with three RBIs, while Chloe Milles, Shelby Scharfen, Sloan Jonathan, and Ashley Blair each drove in a run. Blair and O'Connell each had two doubles, while Caitlin Ryan and Kiara van der Jagt combined for four stolen bases.
Schafen dominated in the circle, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out five in seven innings. Genesee finished with 17 hits and played error-free defense to secure the win.
The Cougars look to keep the momentum as they take on Fayetteville Technical Community College for a double header March 16th.
