Men’s Basketball to Play Owls at NJCAA National Championships
HERKIMER, NY… The #9 nationally ranked Genesee Community College men's basketball team will be playing the Union College NJ Owls in the opening round of the 2025 NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Championships at 6pm Wednesday night at Herkimer College. This makes Genesee's fifth trip to the national tournament, the first since 2021-22.
Genesee (23-6) comes into the contest as the #11 seed in the tournament, earning one of the four at-large bids. Looking at the Cougars, Antoine McFadden leads all of Division III with a 73.2% FG percentage. Damont Hanton leads the team in scoring with 377 points. Zaphian Scott leads the team in assists with 110, nearly averaging a double-double a night. Carlos Perez, Jerry Ortiz, and Zak Rushdan all are shooting over 30% from 3-point land for the season. The Genesee defense locks down their opponent by having a 38.9% Opposing Field Goal Percentage.
The Union College NJ Owls have a 23-4 record overall, ranked #7 in the country, and are the tournament's #6 seed, after earning the North Atlantic District A Championship. Joseph Gargiulo and Nicolas Acosta are ranked second and third in the country in FG percentage, and David McKnight is fifth in the country by shooting 46.8% from behind the arch. Acosta is fifth in the country, averaging 12.1 rebounds per game.
Genesee and Union will play at 6pm Wednesday night from Herkimer College and the game will be streamed on the NJCAA Network.
