HENRIETTA, NY – In a tale of two different games, the outcome was the same for the Genesee Community College baseball team as the host Monroe Community College Tribunes brought out the brooms Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cougars 6-5 and 16-2.
"We played some good teams to start to the season which will prepare us for Regional play," said Genesee head coach Skip Sherman. "As good as the competition we have faced in Florida, Maryland and in New York, our region (NJCAA Region 3) has some very talented teams with good pitching and hitting."
The first game was a back and forth affair with Rodolfo Rodriguez hitting a triple. Elizam De Jesus and Gabriel Diaz each had RBI doubles while John Faynor and Deion Rosalio each had two hits and an RBI each. Jordia Agosto, Frankie Santiago, and Briann Castillo all added hits as Genesee totaled 11 in the game. The Cougars had the lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning and the Tribunes came back and won the game with a two-run walk-off single. On the hill, Colin Noeth and Tyler Prospero combined to strike out 10 Tribunes over six innings of work.
The nightcap game went away from the Cougars early on as costly wild pitches gave the host Tribunes the advantage to get the lead early. Monroe (9-11) added 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning to bust the game wide open and they would go on to the16-2 victory, ending in the fifth inning. Frankie Santiago had an RBI double and two hits for the Cougars in the second game. Eliel Martinez had two hits and Rodriguez, Faynor, De Jesus, and Diaz all had hits.
The Cougars (9-7) are back in action on Sunday, March 31 as they take on Niagara County Community College at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls, NY. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm with the nightcap beginning at 3:00pm.
