Volleyball Team Splits at WNYAC Tourney

The Genesee Community College volleyball team split a pair of matches in the Western New York Athletic Conference Tournament in Jamestown Oct. 20.

The Cougars easily disposed of Niagara in straight sets 25-16 and 25-15, before dropping a heartbreaker to Mercyhurst Northeast in three sets.

Genesee dropped the first set 25-19 and appeared to be on the verge of being swept after the Saints needed just five points to seal the win with a double-digit lead.

Down 20-10, the Cougars scored 15 of the next 18 to take the second set 25-23 and force a third-and-deciding set. The third set went into extra points when Genesee trailed 15-14 before Mercyhurst got match point at 16.

Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto led the team in kills with 11 against the Saints and eight against the Thunderwolves. Lyndsey Rowland had team-highs in blocks in both matches with four total.

Audriana Reeves had a team-high 16 digs against Mercyhurst, and shared the team lead with Pinto against Niagara with eight, while Katherine Alsworth dished a pair of aces against the Thunderwolves.

Pinto, Rowland and Grace Zandrowicz were named to the 2018 All-WNYAC Team.

The Cougars will face third-seed Jefferson, second-seed Broome and seventh-seed Erie in Pool B play of the NJCAA Region III Tournamnet at Niagara County Community College, Sat. Oct 27 with times to be announced.
