Young Cougar Volleyball Team Still Surprising Opponents

2 GCC volleyball players make a block

The Genesee Community College volleyball team traveled to Fulton-Montgomery College for three matches against Herkimer, Mohawk Valley and the host Raiders Sept. 30.

The Cougars were looking to build off their last two wins against Niagara and Mercyhurst North East, but had to settle for just a single win Saturday against the Hawks.

The Mohawk Valley sweep was led by three players, while the Hawks were held under 20 points in each of the three sets with scores of 14, 18, and 19, respectively. Grace Zandrowicz and current GCC Female Athlete of the Week Tommi Rutherford split two dozen digs equally, while Lyndsey Rowland had six blocks and Audriana Reeves added four aces.

Although the Cougars lost 3-1 to host Fulton-Montgomery, they were the only team in pod play to win a set against the Raiders that included Monroe, who appears on the current national rankings list. Genesee recorded 20 points or more in each set losing twice with 20 and once with 21, while taking the third set 25-23.

Rutherford had 25 digs and Sha-Ony Obispa had 10 kills to lead the way for the Cougars. Aleah Foos recorded seven blocks, while Reeves had another game of four aces against a tough Raider team that already has 15 wins on the season.

Against Herkimer, the Cougars were even at 1-1 after two sets, but fell on the short end of the final two sets with 18 in each to drop the match 3-1. Rutherford had her highest dig total of the day at 26 against the Generals, while Obispa added a dozen kills to lead the Cougars. Sydney DeVay recorded three aces and Isabella Slocum had a half-dozen blocks.

The Cougars will next travel to the Syracuse area for the Cara Bryant Tournament Oct. 6 hosted by Onondaga Community College.
