Women’s Soccer Team Bows to No. 10 MCC

Diante Sheepers

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season to visiting Monroe Community College 4-2 Aug. 29.

Genesee remains undefeated in National Junior College Athletic Association Division III play as the Tribunes are a NJCAA D-I team and nationally ranked at No. 10.

The Cougars either held the lead or played tied for nearly the first 75 minutes of the 90 minute contest and took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Diante Scheepers was the story of the first half with a pair of goals with both coming from free kicks.

After Scheepers staked the Cougars to a 1-0 lead about 13:00 minutes into the contest, the Tribunes responded 15 minutes later to tie the contest.

Less than two minutes after Monroe's tying goal, Scheepers restored the Genesee lead.

Both teams had extra time to regroup during the intermission with an extended rain delay with the Tribunes taking advantage of the extra break time with a strong second half.

When action resumed, current NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Week Roosa Ariya scored the game's last three goals to rally the Tribunes.

Jaclyn Guzdek made 11 saves for Genesee as Monroe held the edge in shots on net, 15-6.

The Cougars resume Division III play on the road at Mohawk Valley, Sept. 1 with a 1 p.m. start.
