McGee-Ross

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team built a nine-point lead at the half before winning by double-digits against Corning Community College, 66-56, in Jamestown at the Crossover Tournament's first day of action.

Sophomore TaLia Burgess led the way with a double-double as the team's top point-getter with 18 and top-boarder with 10 in helping Genesee to a 32-23 halftime lead and carrying the team to victory.

Burgess shot 50 percent from three-point land in sinking a dozen of her 18 from beyond the arc.

The Cougars produced three double-digit scorers and were on the brink of a fourth. In addition to Burgess, Tylasia Weaver added 17 points and 10 came from Molly Buck. LisBeth Pineda Polanco was just a bucket shy of joining the double-digit club with eight points on the day.

The Cougars were solid from the free-throw line in going 11-of-15 at 73 percent, and strong under the boards with 34 total. In addition to Burgess' 10 rebounds, Polanco had nine and Weaver recorded seven.

The Cougars improved their season record to 1-1 and will complete Crossover Tournament action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. game against SUNY Broome Nov. 4.
