Cougars Cruise to Home Win over Onondaga

GCC defeats Onondaga, 95-60

Batavia, NY- The Genesee Community College Cougars hosted the Onondaga Community College Lazers on Sunday, in a rematch of the 2022 Region III championship game. The Cougars (14-5, 9-0 in region) took a swift lead over the Lazers (5-11, 2-7 in region) and never looked back, winning decisively by a score of 95-60. This was the second meeting of the season with Genesee winning the first meeting 79-73. 

Genesee took off running early in the first half. The Cougars took a dominant 52-21 lead into the break, led by sophomore Antwan Williams (12 points, one assist, six rebounds) and freshman Richard Martelly (10 points, one assist, one rebound). Genesee shot 47.6% from the field while holding the Lazers to just 22.5% from the field. 

The second half was much of the same for the Cougars. After an early flurry from the Lazers and a Cougars timeout the half returned to the high offensive tempo that had been set in the first half. Genesee would outscore the Lazers 43-39 in the period, shooting 38.8% from the field, while Onondaga shot 35% from the field in the half. 

Williams would lead the Cougars with a double-double, putting up 20 points and 12 rebounds, along with 3 assists. Freshmen Wayne Longmore (eight points, nine rebounds, one assist) and Andrew Endwards-Ferrell (10 points, nine rebounds, one assist) each came one mark away from posting their own double-double. Freshman Charles Lovett lead the Cougars with five assists. 

Onondaga was led by Alex Pagan, who put up 16 points. 

The Cougars next head on the road for a visit to Cayuga on Wednesday before heading on a north country trip over the weekend. Genesee will return home on Saturday, February 4th for a 1PM meeting with Fulton-Montgomery.
