Cougars Remain Unbeaten in Region Play

GCC defeats Corning, 63-54

Batavia, NY – The Genesee Community College Cougars hosted the Red Barons of Corning Community College in a Region III matchup on Saturday. The Cougars (13-5, 8-0 in region) took the victory over the Red Barons (10-4, 7-2 in region) by a score of 63-54. 

The first half was a defensive battle between the two teams, with the period ending 26-24 in favor of the Cougars. Neither team was able to find a consistent offensive rhythm, with Corning shooting just over 31% from the field, and Genesee shooting just 21.6% from the field. Freshman Richard Martelly led the way for the Cougars with 11 points, hitting 3 three-pointers along the way. Freshman Charles Lovett had three assists in the period. 

The second half opened up a bit offensively, however it maintained it's physical defensive style. The Cougars managed to stifle the Red Barons attack, holding them to 28.6% from the field for 30 points. Led by Martelly's 14 second half points and a 37.5% shooting performance, the Cougars put up 37 in the second half. The game stayed tight until late in the half, when Corning had to start fouling, allowing Genesee to open a nine point lead and wrap the game up.  

Martelly finished the game with a double-double, posting 25 points and 14 rebounds to go along with two steals, two blocks and one assist. Lovett lead the team with four assists, along with 15 points. 

Xavier Hill lead Corning with a double-double of his own, putting up 28 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.

The Cougars are back at home tomorrow at 1PM against Onondaga Community College.
