The Genesee Community College baseball team continues to improve and although they went 2-2 during this past week, it was the teams' last two outings that spotlighted the young talented team's potential. The Cougars are only two wins behind Finger Lakes Community College's division-leading four in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region-III Division-III West Division.
The Cougars almost equaled its hit total from their previous three games with 16 against Jamestown Community College in a 11-8 win in the second game against the Jayhawks April 13 to end the week's play.
Jakob MacLeod had three hits and a team-leading eight for the week to lead the Cougars, while Jayson Libert and Deion Rosalia each plated four hits during that same span to help the Cougars to its first division wins.
Libert and L'Shandry Kirindongo joined Macleod with three hits in the matinee matchup against the Jayhawks, while Rosalia and Justin Baly each had a pair with the latter stroking two doubles. Single hits came off the bats of Shannon Folkes, Justin Taveras and Edgardo Jurado.
Genesee took the lead from the get-go and never looked back with Colin Noeth recording the win from the mound.
In the opening game against Jamestown, Genesee rallied with a four-run sixth inning to win 4-3 with MacLeod again recording three hits. Folkes, Rosalia and Peter Bradford also registered hits with the latter plating a triple.
Prior to those games, the Cougars dropped a pair of road games to Erie by scores of 8-4 and 9-7 on April 12.
In the latter contest and second game of the doubleheader, the team's rally fell just short after a five-run seventh inning got the Cougars within a pair of runs. Junior King and Bradford led the way at the plate with two hits, with the latter hitting a solo homerun. Libert belted a double, while single hits came from MacLeod, Folkes and Junior King for seven hits total on the afternoon.
The Cougars had a good start in the opening game against Erie by building a 4-1 lead before dropping the contest 8-4. Genesee had five hits from five batters that included Taveras, Folkes, Rasalia, King and MacLeod.
If weather permits the Cougars are scheduled for their first home outings April 17 against Tompkins-Cortland Community College with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
