Men’s Basketball Takes 2nd Place in Region III

The Genesee Men's Basketball program finished their 2019-2020 season with a tough loss in the Region III DII Championship game on March 1 to Erie Community College.

The regional tournament started on Feb. 25th for the men's team, as they hosted Jamestown CC in the first round of tournament. Genesee went on to defeat the Jayhawks by a score of 104-91. Leading the way for the Cougars was Selassie (Tyler) Bourne with 29 points, as he went 10-15 shooting from the field. Devin Green added another double-double on his season total, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jean Aristil finished the sub-regional contest with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Souleymane Gueye contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds to the solid 13-point victory for Genesee.

Next up for the Cougars was Niagara County Community College in the regional semi-finals on Feb 29th. Genesee earned themselves a hard-fought win over the Thunderwolves, 82-80, thanks to a big second half push. The Cougars went into halftime down by 12, but came out of the break hot, outscoring Niagara County 56-42 in the final 20 minutes of play, helping Genesee edge out a 2-point win and sent them to the regional finals. Bourne led Genesee in scoring, putting up 25 points and dishing out 10 assists. Jalen Willis added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordan Matos finished with 12 points.

In the Region III DII title game on March 1, Genesee went head-to-head with 1-seed Erie Community College. Genesee finished the first half tied with Erie 34-34, but Erie was able to pull away in the second half, resulting in a 91-73 win for Erie, ending the Cougars season. Green had 16 points and 8 rebounds while Matos added 15 points. Legacy Wallace finished with 12 points.

Taking home All-Tournament Team honors for the Cougars were Selassie (Tyler) Bourne and Devin Green.

Earning All-Region Team honors were, Bourne and Willis, who were selected to the All-Region Second Team. Devin Green was selected for the All-Region Third Team.

Genesee finished the 2019-2020 campaign 20-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Cougars went 12-2 at home and averaged 84.8 points a game.
