Women's Volleyball battles in loss to Jefferson

Batavia, NY – Women's Volleyball took on Jefferson Community College at home Tuesday evening in a conference match up.

The first set started off with Jefferson taking charge early on but the cougars would use strong defense to keep them at bay. A strong kill by Sydney Martin gave the cougars a glimpse of hope to claim the set, but a late push by the Cannoneers would close out the first set.

After a battle of points being thrown back and forth on both sides of the court, the Cougars take their first lead of the match against the Cannoneers. A quick tip over by Isabella Guerrette would keep things rolling in an effort to push for a further lead. Though Jefferson went down by as much as six points in the second set, they began to creep up on the Cougar’s lead. With the set tied 19-19, both teams were looking for an edge on the other to grab the set. With the possibility of going down two sets, a kill from Elena Azzi would be just want the cougars needed to even the playing field. With a fantastic tip by Tia Stone and a mishap from the cannoneers would be the final points for Genesee to take the second set, and even things out.

First on the board would be the cougars, after the Cannoneers send one out of bounds and an ace from Allie Dent. Taking advantage of the faults from Jefferson, they find themselves leading by five early on. Forcing their way through, the Cougars would lean on their outstanding defensive efforts coupled with offensive strikes against the Cannoneers. A sweeping kill by Marissa Ciufo would dampen the start of an answer to all of Jefferson’s attacks. The set would soon be tied up again, with both teams stnading at 20-20. Despite the Cougars amazing efforts, the Cannoneers would be the ones to hold the 2-1 lead in the match.

Neither team would let up in the beginning of the fourth set, both trying to change the fate of the game. Though the Cougars would keep themselves on the board, the Cannoneers take the lead. A kill from Martin could be just the thing they need to change the momentum. Though the cougars would give everything had, the Cannoneers would take the final set.

The standout player would be Sydney Martin with 2 Aces, 12 Kills, 13 Digs and 8 Assists.

The cougars will have a chance to add back a win on saturday at Erie Community College for a Region III POD match against Erie CC and Niagara CC, starting at 10:00 AM.
