Genesee Falls in a Close One on Sophomore Night

GCC falls to Monroe 3-2

BATAVIA, NY… The #4 Genesee Women's Soccer team celebrated their Sophomore Night, honoring nine of their sophomore players before the game, but fell in a close one to cross-town rival Monroe, 3-2.

Monroe was first to get on the scoreboard as Sierra Edwards would net her first goal of the contest off an assist from Abie LaRocca. About twelve minutes later, Monroe was awarded a penalty kick, which Edwards put in the back of the net for her second goal of the night, giving Monroe a 2-0 lead. The score would stay locked at 2-0 through the remainder of the first half.

Genesee would not go quietly, however. Kelsey Fuller would cut the Tribunes lead in half as she snuck in her first goal of the night to narrow the Monroe lead to 2-1. Later in the half, Genesee would commit another penalty, leading to another PK for Sierra Edwards, which she would go on to convert, for her third goal of the contest and gave the Tribunes a 3-1 lead. The Cougars fought hard to close the gap in the remaining minutes of the game which would result in Fuller's second goal of the game, assisted by Kelly Mickey, to trim the Tribune lead to 3-2. Time would run out on the Cougars comeback attempt however, as the final horn in regulation locked in a 3-2 victory for Monroe.

Kellie Brewer played all ninety minutes in net for Genesee, saving 11 of the 14 shots she faced.

Genesee travels to Jamestown in search of their tenth win of the season on October 13 at 2pm.
