The Genesee Community College swimming teams ended the second day of competition in the National Junior College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving National Championships with three new school records in Fort Pierce, Fla. with one coming in relay competiton and the other two in individual competition.
Nanako Shiozawa set a women's record in the 100-meter butterfly with a 1:01.40 time, while the men's 400-meter medley relay squad also set a school record with a time of 3:39.70. Ferran Martinez set a school record in the 400-meter individual medley during the preliminaries with a 4:06.76 time with the same fourth-place finish he would garner in the same event during finals competition.
Overall the Cougars recorded eight top-10 finishes with four in both men's and women's competition that were inclusive of the three aforementioned school records.
Leading the women's team was Shiozawa's aforementioned record that was good for fifth place. Angel Priest finished seventh in the 50-meter backstroke with a 29.45 time. The women's 200-meter freestyle relay team finished eighth with a 1:48.58 time, and the 400-meter medley relay team finished 10th with a 4:38.18 time. Swimming in the women's 200 free was Priest, Natalie Amico, Zuwenna Alberto and Shiozawa; while the 400 medley was comprised of Priest, Amico, Shiozawa and Mady Roth.
Leading the men's team was Martinez's fourth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley with a 4:08.94 time. Just like the women's team, the men recorded top-10 finishes in both the 400-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relays. The school record time previously mentioned in the 400 medley was good for a seventh-place finish and included the foursome of Nathan Richardson, Joan Ferrer, Brandon Brown and Martinez. The 200 freestyle was good for an eighth-place finish at 1:32.52 with Brown being the lone Cougar as a part of both top-10 relay finishes. Joining Brown in the 200 freestyle was Benjamin Vacanti, Ryan Mahaney and Matthew Langerman. Ferrer rounded out the men's top-10 finishes with a ninth-place showing in the 100-meter butterfly with a 53.82 time.
Both Richardson and Brown just missed individual top-10 finishes; Richardson in the 50-meter backstroke (25.91) and Brown in the 200-meter freestyle (1:52.44), with the pair both finishing 11th. Also competing in the latter event was Langerman with a 14th place finish (1:54.55), while Mahaney finished 16th in the 100-meter butterfly (59.67).
Amico recorded a 15th-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly to round out the women's top-15 individual finishes.
While the men's team remained in eighth place with 134 points after the second day, the women's team moved up two spots to 10th with 75 points.
Day Three preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. with finals again beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 9.
