The Genesee Community College men's soccer team won't know their next national ranking until early next week, but they do know it will be higher than their current No. 7 spot. That's because the Cougars made a statement with a 4-1 win over current No. 4 Montgomery, Sept. 16 under the lights at the Richard C. Call Arena's soccer field.
The Raptors entered the contest with a perfect 7-0 record and a plus-40 goal differential over its oppositions. Montgomery had only allowed a mere three goals thus far this season – until tonight when Genesee more than doubled that total with four goals of their own.
Sam Hall broke a 1-1 tie just over two minutes into the second half with a perfectly-placed shot that went in off the right post for the game winner. Hall then extended the Cougars' lead to a pair with his second of the night with about 14 minutes to go.
The game winner was set up by Luke Bayliss, while Ross White earned an assist on Hall's second. The Raptors had a chance to make a game of it when Genesee received a red card and was forced to play short a man not long after Hall made it 3-1, but Glenn Holmes took a Benjamin Seaton pass for a breakaway goal to put Genesee up 4-1 late in the contest and all but seal the win.
Current National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association D-III Soccer Player-of-the Week Ryan Price had staked the Cougars to a 1-0 lead with under seven minutes to go in the first half, but the Raptors quickly responded with a goal of their own about a minute later.
Montgomery out-shot Genesee 21-18 overall, held the edge on shots on net by a 14-10 margin, and recorded more corner kicks 7-3; but Genesee keeper David Ormiston out-played Jose Pesoa with more than double the amount of saves than the Raptor keeper with 13.
Diving to his left in full flight, Ormiston's best save of the game came with about 33 minutes left in the second and with the Raptors knocking on the door to tie the score. The sophomore keeper looked at his acrobatic best in deflecting away a shot destined for the top right corner.
