DRYDEN, NY - The Genesee Community College baseball team won the season series with Tompkins Cortland Community College with a 12-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday. GCC (21-14, 9-6 Region III, West Division) lost game one, 8-7 then bounced back to win game two, 12-1.
Parker Cole (Bolivar-Richburg) tossed a complete game 1-hitter for the win striking out nine and did not walk a batter. "The key for Parker was he got ahead of 19-of-27 batters he faced," said Genesee head coach Skip Sherman. "With his fastball and his off-speed pitches working, he is hard to hit. When he got ahead, batters were just swinging defensive and he was getting quick outs in many of the innings. He only threw 82 pitches in seven innings."
The one run allowed was unearned as defense hurt the Cougars in game one as well when GCC made six errors leading to seven unearned runs. "Colin Noeth deserved better in the first game," said Sherman. "He kept getting two-out ground balls and errors would lead to runners and runs. We battled back and took a lead, but just couldn't put it away.
"But I'm proud of the way the defense did not look back and looked ahead to the next play and rallied for a very strong game two," Sherman added.
At the plate in the second game, Eliel Martinez and Roldolfo Rodriguez hit home runs in the sixth inning for GCC. Martinez also tripled and scored three runs. In the first game, he belted two doubles and had 2 RBI's.
John Faynor had three hits including a double in the first game and had four hits and two runs on the day, Deion Rosalio had three hits including a double and three runs, Jordi Agosto had four hits including a triple and two RBI's and Bryant Fontanez had an RBI double. Catcher Briann Castillo had a big day, going 4-for-5 in both games with a double, 4 RBI's and two runs.
On the mound in game one, Noeth threw four innings, struck out three and allowed one earned run while Jayson Faynor threw two scoreless innings and struck out two without giving up a hit.
Genesee will be home Saturday vs SUNY Broome and then will be on the road to face the Hornets Sunday. Both NJCAA baseball doubleheaders will begin at 1 pm.
