Jayhawks Grind Out A 2-1 Record At The Jamestown CC POD

JAMESTOWN - Hosting the Jamestown Community College POD Saturday afternoon, the JCC volleyball team grinded out a 2-1 record on the day.

 

The Jayhawks (8-7, 8-2 Region3), who are winners of eight of their last nine matches, came down from an 0-2 deficit against Genesee Community College to win the match 3-2. In the second match, JCC battled with Finger Lakes Community College but fell in a four-set match. In their final contest of the afternoon, JCC surrendered the first set to Monroe Community College but rattled off three straight to secure the victory.

In their first match of the day, the Jayhawks took the Cougars to five sets with set scores of 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, and 16-14. Outside hitter Mikala Einink (Clymer, NY/Clymer Central) came up big on offense, collecting 16 kills with middle hitter Rian Finch (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) and right side hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) each adding nine and eight kills, respectively.

 

Setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) put together a 39 assist game while defensive specialist Breanna Gilbert-Hopkins (Falconer, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) caught the Cougars' defense sleeping, getting five aces. Johnson and Pumford also added four service aces as well.

 

On defense, Einink led the way with 16 digs with Pumford adding 10 digs. Finch was solid at the net, getting four solo blocks. Pumford and middle hitter Cadance Main (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) also showed their presence at the net, getting three blocks assists.

In their second of back-to-back matches, the Jayhawks fell to the Lakers in four set with scores of 16-25, 20-25, 27-25, and 13-25. Outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) led the offense with 11 kills while Finch and Einink each added nine kills. Johnson had another 30-assist output, dishing out 31 assists.

 

On defense, libero Sydney Ulasewicz (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) and Einink led the way with digs, picking up 15 apiece. Pumford added 12 digs during the match.

In their final match of the day, the Jayhawks overcame an early 0-1 hole to win in four sets with scores of 19-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-16. McCarthy led the offensive attack once again, picking up 14 kills with Einink adding 10 kills. Finch and Main also took advantage of their attacks, itching getting nine kills. Johnson had a career-match, getting 46 assists which is now a new carer-high for the sophomore setter.

 

On defense, Ulasewicz had 21 digs with Pumford adding 18 to the total.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Tuesday, September 27th, as they host Niagara County Community College in WNYAC action at 6 p.m.
