GCC’s team was ranked #4 the entire season from pre-season to the last poll before playoffs started. The National Championship game was the third time facing off against Onondaga CC. GCC started the game great with a 2 -1 lead but then OCC scored the next five goals to make it 6 - 2. OCC would score two more goals for an 8 - 5 lead at half time. The third quarter score had OCC leading 10 - 8. GCC started the fourth quarter with three straight goals, including two by Sherman Williams within a minute to give GCC the lead at 11-10. Onondaga would score two more goals to take a 12 -11 lead with five minutes to go. Pat Van Bortle tied the game up at 12 with three minutes to go. In overtime GCC’s defense came up with huge saves from Darin Eakins and caused turnovers by Reed Hnidy. Pat Van Bortle would score his fourth of the game and the most important goal scored in the history of GCC’s lacrosse program, for the school’s first National Lacrosse Championship.
