BATAVIA, NY… On Sunday, January 13th, the Genesee Women’s Soccer Team hosted their annual Junior Varsity Tournament. There were ten teams, broken up into two brackets, playing for the championship title. Bracket 1 consisted of five teams: Addison 2, Greece 1, Holley, Northwest, and YMCA White. The five teams in bracket 2 were Addison 1, Bergen, Genesee, Greece 2, and YMCA Blue. Games started at 8am and went until 2:30pm.

Each team played two games within their bracket and then were seeded 1-5. The 4th and 5th place teams in both games had a play-in game to get to the play-offs. This was one of our strongest Junior Varsity Tournaments in years and the competition was high. Many players hold accolades at their respected High Schools. The Director of the tournament, Jeff Reyngoudt, was pleased with the interest this year and the level of play.

After the play-in games, only 8 teams remained. In Bracket 1, Holley, the 1st place team, was set to play YMCA White, who was seeded 5th place, but knocked Addison 2 out of the tournament. 2nd place, Northwest, played 3rd place, Greece 1. In Bracket 2, 1st place, Genesee, played YMCA Blue, who was also seeded 5th, but beat out Bergen in the play-in game. Addison 1 was the 2nd place team and they played 3rd place Greece 2. Once we hit the semi-finals, only four teams were still standing. 1st place Holley had to compete against 2nd place Northwest and 1st place Genesee had to play 2nd place Addison 1. Once we got to the championship game, both number 1 teams were set to play one another, Holley and Genesee. They were so evenly matched that after the 18 minute game, they were still tied 0-0, which resulted in a Penalty Kick Shootout. Both teams picked their five shooters, but Holley was the team that came out on top with 3 pks to Genesee’s 2.

Cougars Head Coach Jeff Reyngoudt and his assistant, Macy Reyngoudt, were overly impressed with the strength of these teams and the class that they all showed. They are excited about what’s to come in the next few years and are happy to see teams in the area continue to be strong competition. Jeff and Macy use their tournament as a recruiting tool for their team and saw many young prospects.

The Genesee Women’s Soccer Team will be hosting their annual Varsity tournament on Sunday, March 10th. If you would like to submit a team please email Jeff Reyngoudt at jcreyngoudt@genesee.edu.
