Cougars Finish Second at WNYAC Tournament

NORTH EAST, PA…  The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team finished in second place at the Western New York Athletic Conference tournament Saturday afternoon, hosted by Mercyhurst North East. Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto was named to the All-Conference team prior to the start of the tournament. 

Genesee took the first two games of the WNYAC tournament, sweeping previous conference unbeaten Jamestown Community College Jayhawks and Erie Community College Kats, before falling to the host Mercyhurst Northeast Saints in three sets.

The matchup against the Jayhawks saw Kaitlyn VanSkiver lead the way for Genesee on the net. Morgan Mathis, Clarice Misiak and Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto also played well for the blue and gold. In the second game of the day against the Kats, Neely Abrams led the way in assists for Genesee. Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto had a great game as well.

In the championship game against the Saints, Genesee lost by two points in the third and decisive set. Kaitlyn VanSkiver, Morgan Mathis, and Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto were key players against the Saints. "The Cougars defensive play was incredible all tournament long" stated head coach Emilee Piechocki.

Attention now turns to NJCAA Region III Tournament play and Genesee will host Herkimer College Tuesday night in the sub regional game. All fans are encouraged to wear white Tuesday night to cheer on the Cougars against the Generals. Game time from inside the Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium on the Batavia campus is scheduled for 6pm.
