volleyball action at TC3

The Genesee Community College volleyball team took two of three matches this past weekend for their 12th region win. Of the eight region teams that advance, the three teams beneath Genesee - with 10 wins - will battle for the final two region playoff spots when the regionals begin Oct. 27 in Sanborn.

The Cougars swept two opponents over the weekend with a 3-0 win over Corning and a 3-0 win over host Tompkins Cortland. The team's only loss was to second-place Broome, 3-1.

The Hornets have only lost one region contest this season and although Genesse lost three of the four sets to Broome Saturday, they did score as many points as Broome over those four sets with each team scoring 91.

Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto led the team in three categories against the Hornets including digs (25), kills (10) and aces (three). Kaitlyn VanSkiver and Sha-Ony Obispa each had a team-high five blocks.

In the sweep against the Panthers, Pinto led the team in digs with 11 and aces with eight. Obispa had nine kills with Lyndsey Rowland adding four blocks (three solo).

In the sweep against the Red Barons, Pinto led the team in kills with eight, Rowland in blocks with six and Audriana Reeves in digs with 18. Three Cougars had a pair of aces each from Pinto, Obispa and Katherine Alsworth.

Genesee completes the regular season at Niagara Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and then will begin the Western New York Athletic Conference playoffs at Jamestown Oct. 20.
