Cougar Volleyball Team Unstoppable

Lyndsey Rowland

The Genesee Community College volleyball team traveled to Finger Lakes Community College for three pod matches and came away with three wins. The Cougars have now won seven of its last eight and became the first Genesee fall sports team to record double-digit wins on the season.

The Cougars started the day with eight wins and now have 11. Nine of those have been by 3-0 sweeps, while the other two have displayed the mark of resiliency of a team that shows tremendous promise.

That resiliency was on display Saturday afternoon when Genesee rallied from an 0-2 start to take the last three sets against Herkimer. It was the second time this season that the team rallied in that same impressive fashion with a sweep of the final three sets after being down 0-2.

Against Herkimer, Genesee lost the first two sets 25-17 and 25-23, but rallied with set wins of 25-18, 25-20 and 15-7. Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto led the team in a pair of categories with 34 digs and 22 kills. Katherine Alsworth served six aces and Lyndsey Rowland added six blocks.

Rowland has been a blocking machine this season and had 14 throughout the day that included a team-high four in the team's sweep of Mohawk Valley. Genesee won in straight sets of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-21. Alsworth again led the team in aces with three against Mohawk Valley, while Pinto had 11 kills and Audriana Reeves led the team in digs with 14.

Against Fulton-Montgomery, the Cougars cruised with set wins of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-14. The Raiders couldn't come within 10 points in any set. Rowland shared the blocking lead with Ariah Tocha with four. Kaitlyn VanSkiver had a team-high four aces of the team's 13. Pinto led in kills with seven, while Grace Zandrowicz led in digs with eight.

The team is off next week and returns to Finger Lakes for its next action Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
