Volleyball Team Goes 3-0 in Weekend Pod Play

Women's Volleyball huddle before game

The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team shook off the rust from playing its opening opponent – that appeared in the national poll – last week and rattled off three wins in Adirondack Sept. 9 during POD play.

Only the Cougars' first match against Hudson Valley went the distance with Genesee out-lasting the Vikings 3-2. In that match Sha-Ony Obispa and Lyndsey Rowland each recorded a dozen kills, while Tommi Rutherford and Abbie Royce had five aces apiece.

Against SUNY Adirondack, the Cougars were on their way to a sweep until the Timberwolves took the third set, 25-22 to keep the match alive. Obispa had 11 kills, while Rutherford added 22 digs and Grace Zandrowicz recorded five aces.

In the Cougars final match of the day they went out with a bang in a 3-1 win over North Country Community College by sweeping the last three sets for the win. Rowland and Isabella Slocum combined for 25 of their team's 41 kills, while the latter also registered four blocks against the Saints.

The Cougars never lost an even-numbered set the entire morning and afternoon taking sets two and four from each of their three opponents for a perfect 6-0 even-set record.

Genesee travels to Jamestown for a 6 p.m. match Sept. 12; before traveling to Canandaigua for POD play against Jefferson, Onondaga and Cayuga at Finger Lakes Community College Sept. 16.
