No. 7 Cougars Fall to Herkimer 3-1

The No. 7 GCC women's soccer team lost its first Region III Division III home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to visiting Herkimer College 3-1.

Coming off of a win over No. 3 Finger Lakes CC on Wednesday, the No. 7 Cougars played their final game of a four-game homestand on Saturday.

Strong defensive play, including five first half saves by GCC goalkeeper Katlynne Tubo, presented few scoring chances for either team in the first half, and both teams were scoreless at the break.

All four goals in the second half came in an 11 minute span, starting in the 68th minute when Herkimer's Grace Johnson got the game's first goal to put the Generals in front 1-0.

Johnson wasted little time to increase Herkimer's lead, scoring again just over a minute later to make it 2-0.

GCC cut the lead in half in the 76th minute, after Sarah Williams put one just under the cross bar for her sixth goal of the season. Gabriella Garcea earned the assist.

That would be all the offense for Genesee, however, and Johnson recorded the hat trick in the 79th minute to give Herkimer back a two-goal lead, a lead that would hold for the final 11 minutes of play.

Despite allowing three goals in the game, GCC still holds a goals against average of 0.79 on the season. Tubo finished the contest with seven saves in net.

Genesee (11-4) will travel to Mercyhurst University North East for its next contest on Oct. 18.
