After putting together a regular season record of 12 wins, three losses and one tie, the Genesee Community College women's soccer team heads into the postseason as the number one seed in the West Region for the 2013 Region 3 Division 3 Women's Soccer Championships.
Ranked as high as number 7 in the NJCAA National Poll this season, Genesee earned wins over three top-ten teams (Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Anne Arundel Community College and Finger Lakes Community College) this fall.
Behind a defense and goalkeepers that have allowed an average of just 1.3 goals per game, GCC has outscored opponents 53-21 this year and send an average of 23 shots per game toward its opposition, third most in the country.
Sophomore forward Dana Hanson (Hilton, NY) leads the team in scoring with 34 total points (13 goals, 8 assists). Freshman forward Ashley Makowski (Kendall, NY) has put together a strong season with 11 goals and four assists (26 points) and freshman midfielder Kate Springsteen (Bergen, NY) and sophomore forward Denae McGrath (Churchville, NY) have each scored six goals.
With the number 1 seed, Genesee has earned a first-round bye and will play host in its second-round matchup on Oct. 22. GCC will await the winner of Jamestown Community College at Hudson Valley Community College, a match that will be played on Saturday. Game time for Oct. 22 is to be announced.
West Region seedings: #1 Genesee, #2 Finger Lakes CC, #3 Tompkins-Cortland CC, #4 Onondaga CC, #5 Jamestown Community College.
East Region seedings: #1 Mohawk Valley CC, #2 SUNY Delhi, #3 Broome CC, #4 Hudson Valley CC, #5 Herkimer County CC, #6 North Country CC.
The Region will crown a winner from two groups of mixed pairings, with each winner qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament, which begins on Nov. 7.
