Women's Lacrosse Earns NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Award

The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team was recently honored as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Team of the Year for 2016-17. Junior college athletic teams throughout the country with the highest grade point average in each sport earn the distinction of Academic Team of the Year.

GCC women's lacrosse combined for a 3.41 grade point average to lead all women's lacrosse programs and earned the award for the third time in the last five years. Members of this year's team include Molly Barden, Paige Biggins, Katline Cartwright, Claudia Cooney, Madeline Cruz, Allison Duhow, Claire Hardie, Leah Herman, Jenna Lewis, Momoka Masuda, Reika Murota, Lyuba Salin, Kelsey Scott-Avery, Olivia Steedman, Katlynne Tubo, Sarah Williams, Jayna Wright, Kali Wright and Sara Zakes.

A total of 25 teams – 12 men's and 13 women's – were honored by the NJCAA as Academic Team of the Year for accumulating the highest GPA in their respective sport, meeting at least the minimum 3.0 requirement. A total of 740 teams posted a 3.0 GPA or higher in 2016-17, setting a new NJCAA record.

Genesee finished the spring season with a 2-5 record and had five players recognized as All-Western New York Athletic Conference.
