Lady Cougars Notch First Win in First Road Game Against Red Barons

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team got its first win of the young season in Corning in the Red Baron's Crossover Tournament with the Cougars taking on Corning in the morning matchup.

Genesee beat Corning 55-47 and were led by Estella Anderson's 12 points and Chevaneese Millington's 11. The freshmen pair nearly accounted for half of Genesee's offensive point total, while another freshman - Jasmine Holmes nearly hit double-digits herself with a nine-point outing.

Millington was the team's only double-double player with 11 rebounds, while also adding a team-highs in assists (four) and steals (three).

Anderson and TaLia Burgess combined for a dozen boards with each registering six apiece.

The Cougars built up a nine-point lead after the first quarter and maintained that margin at the half with a 27-18 lead. The Red Barons came out stronger in the second half and cut the Genesee lead to seven points after three quarters and got within a pair late in the fourth, before the Cougars reestablished some breathing room and finished with the eight-point win.

Genesee hopes to continue its success in the Crossover Tournament with a game against SUNY Broome Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at host Corning.
