No. 3 Men’s Soccer Team Wraps up Regular Season with 5-1 Win

The No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team ended its regular season on a three-game winning streak after beating visiting Broome 5-1 Oct. 20.

The win was the Cougars' 10th in its last 11 starts as the Cougars finished the regular season with a 15-3 record and now await the winner of a playoff quarterfinal matchup between Hudson valley and Mohawk Valley on Oct. 23. The winner will travel to Batavia Oct. 25 for a District A NJCAA Region-III semifinal game at 7:30 p.m.

Rodrigo Albuquerque's penalty kick early in the first half proved to be the game winner and also the freshman's nation-leading eighth winner on the season.

Albuquerque finished with a pair of goals and at the game's end had established a 19-point lead in the race as the National Junior College Athletic Association D-III's leading scorer.

Ed Port added a pair of assist to bring his total to 21 – also a nation-leading number in that category.

Philip Melo was the only other Cougar in on two or more goals with one goal and an assist.

Camilo Pernet Jimenez and Iyad Lablack rounded out the goal scoring, while Hijiri Sano added an assist in the win.

Matthies Meyer and Adrian Bergman shared the win in net with 45 minutes of action apiece.
