No. 1 Nassau Edges No. 4 Genesee

A scoreless second half proved to be the difference for the No. 4 GCC men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars fell to visiting No. 1 Nassau CC 10-7.

Genesee held a 7-6 lead at half but could not find the back of the net in the final 30 minutes.

After falling behind 4-1 just over five minutes into the first quarter, Reed Hnidy got GCC to within two after converting a ground ball on the Genesee-side of midfield into an unassisted goal, his second goal of the season. The Lions responded just over a minute later to take a 5-2 lead, but GCC went on to score three straight to end the quarter to tie the game at five. Davis Prince, Sherman Williams and Pat Van Bortle each found the back of the net for the Cougars in the opening period.

GCC wasted little time in the second quarter, taking the lead just 14 seconds in on Van Bortle's second goal of the game off an assist from Jacob Bomberry.

Both teams played nearly 12 minutes of scoreless lacrosse before Nassau tied the game at six with 2:58 left in the half, but Jonah Mohawk sent the Cougars into the half with the lead after his lone goal of the afternoon with 44 seconds remaining.

NCC shut out GCC in the second half and found the back of the net three times in the third quarter and once in the fourth to remain unbeaten on the season and drop Genesee to 7-3.

Van Bortle and Williams each finished with two goals to lead the GCC offense and John Jimerson had two assists and two caused turnovers.

Mike Caternolo won 13 of 20 face-offs and collected six ground balls. Hnidy finished with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers, Alex Henry added eight ground balls and three caused turnovers and James Deakin had six ground balls and two caused turovers.

Darin Eakins made nine saves in net.

Genesee will begin a stretch of three consecutive road games on Wednesday when the Cougars travel to SUNY Broome for a 4 p.m. face-off.
