Genesee Defeats Mercyhurst; Advances to Region III Final Four

BATAVIA, NY… The Genesee Community College men's basketball team defeated the Mercyhurst Northeast Saints 71-59 in the WNYAC/NJCAA Region III Division II Sub-Regional game Tuesday night. With the victory, Genesee advances to the Final Four, and will play Erie Community College in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.

While the Cougars trailed for much of the opening half and was down as many as nine points, Genesee clawed their way back into the game behind strong play from Jamir Cheek and Kevin Major. Key blocks from Alpha Camara and strong play off the glass from Brandon Speller carried Genesee to the victory.

Kevin Major led the way in scoring for Genesee with 24 points. Jarett Haines scored 13 points and five assists. Jamir Cheek scored eight points and added seven assists. Alpha Camara scored eight points with three blocks. Brandon Speller scored nine points, collected seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Genesee advances to the Region III Tournament Final Four. Genesee will play Erie Community College Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. The game will take place at the Burt Flickinger Center in Downtown Buffalo, NY.
