Men’s Basketball Team’s Strong Second Half Shoots Down Red Barons

The Genesee Community College men's basketball team opened its season with a 72-67 win over Corning Community College in Jamestown at the Crossover Tournament's opening day of action.

Jarett Haines got 24 of his team-leading 30 points from threes as Genesee's 39 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc was the difference in the game. Haines also led the team in assists with six.

Javin Williams and Souleymane Gueye combined for 27 points with the former netting 15. Jamir Cheek pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go with nine points to put the Cougars undefeated for the season at 1-0.

With the teams tied at 32 after the first half, Genesee turned it up a notch and outscored the Red Barons 40-35 in the second to secure the win.

Haines broke a 36-36 tie early in the second with one of his eight threes with 16 minutes remaining before draining another three minutes later to give the Cougars a double-digit lead at 48-38.

Williams drove to the net with a layup to give Genesee its greatest lead at 70-59 with about four minutes to go before the Cougars focused on defense for the final minutes.

Kevin Major and Jordan Matos each added a pair of points from the bench.

The Cougars will complete Crossover Tournament action tomorrow with a 5 p.m. game against SUNY Broome Nov. 4.
