Men’s Basketball Team Looking to Advance Past Kats to Region Finals

Region III Logo for Basketball Championships

Although the Genesee Community College men's basketball team finished with identical conference records with Erie Community College, the Kats won the tie-breaker by virtue of head-to-head competition with a 2-1 edge in the season's three-game series.

Genesee took the first matchup in Buffalo, 81-70 in November. The Kats rebounded by taking the last two by scores of 96-93 and 110-70 with the teams last meeting less than a month ago on Feb. 14. and by virue took the second seed in the tournament with the Cougars being the third.

What makes the Kats such a mystery is their conference statistics. While leading the conference in points-per-game with 88.1, they also have the poorest conference shooting percentage from the floor at 42.8 percent. The teams are almost dead-even in three percentages at 34.3 and 34.2.

Helping to understand the discrepancies may lie with rebounding where Erie is not only tops, but has a considerable edge over all the other conference teams when it comes to offensive rebounds with 18.7 per-game.

Although the game may end up a high-scoring contest with the conference's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in scoring (conference points-per-game) going against one another, the difference may come from the free-throw line where the Cougars have a 10-percent edge at 77-67 percent.

The winner advances to the region championship game tomorrow against the Niagara County Community College/Monroe Community College winner later today.
