Men’s Basketball Team Thwarts Niagara Rally with 75-70 Win

GCC Men's basketball player Brian Fobbs in action

Rahmel Thompson sank a late three to break a 70-70 tie for the Genesee Community College men's basketball team to propel them to a 75-70 victory over visiting Niagara County Community College, Nov. 15. Jarett Haines added a pair of insurance free throws to seal the win in Western New York Athletic Conference play.

Niagara opened the game's scoring with a three, but the Cougars went on a 17-point run that may have ultimately led to the win. The Thunderwolves finished the first half out-scoring Genesee 28-18, but the early Cougar run left them with a 35-31 lead at the half.

Niagara finally caught the Cougars and took their first lead since the opening basket at 49-48 midway through the second half and would extend that lead to five points at 55-50. Genesee responded with 10 unanswered points to take a five-point lead of their own at 60-55.

The Cougars remained in control until late when the game was tied one last time at 70 apiece, but Thompson's late three proved to be the winning bucket.

Genesee had four double-digit scorers led by Brian Fobbs, who had team-highs in points with 24 and rebounds with eight. In addition, he shot 50 percent from three-point land going 3-for-6 from outside the arc.

Brandon Peters added 14 points and a team-high six assists, while Thompson scored 13 and Haines 11, with the latter also registering three steals on the night to lead all Cougars in that department.

The Cougars next travel to Lakeland Community College, Nov. 21 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
