Lewis Breaks Program Record as Lakers Secure 62-55 Win Over Genesee
BATAVIA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College women's basketball team battled to a 62-55 victory over Genesee Community College on Wednesday night, fueled by a historic defensive performance from Jazzmyn Lewis (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo).
Lewis, who finished the night with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 11 steals, and 5 assists, etched her name into the FLCC record books, becoming the program's all-time steals leader with 120 steals and counting.
"It's an amazing feat for Jazz to break a two-year career record in just sixteen games," said head coach Maureen Loyal. "With nine games left in our season, she still has time to build on that number. She amazes me with how she tracks the ball and gains possession so quickly. She has great instincts and athleticism to go after the ball and comes away with it time after time. It has helped us be competitive and successful this year. Our team defense, I think, is one of the best around, and Jazzmyn is a central component of that success."
Dalayla Alexander (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) was also key in the Lakers' win, posting 24 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals, and 5 assists, draining 6 three-pointers to keep the offense rolling. Jade Roussell (Dundee, N.Y./Dundee) added 8 points and 9 rebounds, while Kierra Shaughnessy (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) and Eliana Mason (Frederick, MD./New Life Christian) combined for 13 rebounds and 7 assists, contributing on both ends of the floor.
The Lakers' defense set the tone, forcing 22 steals and holding Genesee in check down the stretch. The Lakers capitalized on turnovers, converting them into scoring opportunities to maintain their lead through four quarters. Despite a tough shooting night, their 42-34 rebounding edge and tenacious defense proved to be the difference.
With the win, Finger Lakes improves to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Lakers will look to carry their momentum into their next matchup on Sunday, February 2nd, at 1 PM, when they take on Fulton-Montgomery Community College on the road.
