SUNY Niagara drops opener at regionals

Top-seeded SUNY Niagara had the game-tying run thrown out at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 4-3 setback to Genesee Community College in the opening game of the Region III Championships on Thursday afternoon at Falcon Park.

The Thunderwolves (47-10 overall), ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, will now face rival Erie Community College in an elimination contest scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday.

SUNY Niagara sophomore Owen Silliman was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored to lead the offense. Freshman Gavyn Boyle went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, sophomore Nicholas Schulz added two hits and classmate Brett Johnson tripled.

N-Trip freshman Aidan Paul threw 6.2 hitless innings before an outfield error allowed GCC to rally. Paul also had five Ks.
