Baseball Earns Key Regional Sweep on the Road

BATAVIA, N.Y. - The FLCC baseball team traveled to Genesee Community College Sunday afternoon for a NJCAA Region III matchup with the 23-6 Cougars.

The Cougars, ranked as one of the best Region III teams this season put their potential on display in what turned out to be two close games with the Lakers.

Game one vs. Genesee

The Lakers rallied back after trailing 3-0 heading into the fourth inning to secure a 9-7 victory in game one. The team collected 14 hits over seven innings, led by Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) who went 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs, DJ Stoianovich (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate to go with 1 RBI, and Kenny Murphy (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) who finished 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

Nicholas Franceschi (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) earned the win, striking out 3 batters over 3 innings and allowing 3 earned runs. Sophomore Devin Georgetti (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) came in, in relief, striking out 3 batters in two innings to earn the save.

Game two vs. Genesee

The Lakers hit the Cougars early, tacking on 1 run apeice in the first and second inning, before exploding for 5 runs in the third. The Cougars would attempt to mount a comeback, but the Lakers would tack on 2 insurance runs in the sixth before holding the Cougars scoreless in the seventh to secure the 10-8 victory.

The Lakers had 7 hits and drew 11 walks as a team in the game. Freshman Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) played an efficent game going 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and 3 walks. Teammate Tyler Cerame finished 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and a walk, while fellow sophomore Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) drove in 2 runs on a 1-for-2 performance at the plate. Catcher Matthew Rodriguez (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) wrapped up the Lakers performance, driving in a 1-for-3 finish at the plate.

The Lakers move to 30-9 and will be on the road for their next game of the season at Jamestown Community College, tomorrow, April 25th. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 PM.
