Lakers Close Regular Season with Two Sweeps, Set Sights on MSAC Title

HENRIETTA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team closed out their regular season with two commanding 3-0 sweeps against Jamestown and Genesee Community College. With the wins, the Lakers extended their win streak to 23 matches, improving to 24-2 overall. Ranked #3 in the nation, the Lakers have not dropped a set in their last 16 matches, setting the stage for an exciting postseason run.

In the first match against Jamestown, Payton Stoddard (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) set the tone with 15 assists and 4 service aces. Jackie Neureuter (Pembroke, N.Y./Pembroke) was unstoppable at the net, racking up 5 kills on 6 attempts with a hitting percentage of .833, while also contributing 6 service aces. Michelina Williams (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) dominated the defense with 10 aces and 14 digs. Kayce Hennekey (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) added 5 kills on 6 attempts, hitting .833, and Emma Balduf (Bergen, N.Y./Byron-Bergen) added 3 kills. The Lakers' strong serving and attacking left Jamestown struggling to keep up as the Lakers cruised to a 3-0 win.

In the second match of the day against Genesee, the Lakers continued their impressive play. Payton Stoddard led the offense once again with 29 assists and 4 service aces. Jackie Neureuter added 7 kills, while Anna Kurtzhalts tallied 9 kills and Kayce Hennekey contributed 7 kills. Michelina Williams remained a key player on defense, with 5 service aces and 8 digs, while Emma Balduf and Mary Pierce (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each added kills to complete the team effort in the 3-0 sweep.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the postseason, where they will host Onondaga Community College in the Mid-State Athletic Conference semifinals next Saturday, October 26th at 11 AM. The Lakers have swept Onondaga 3-0 in both matchups this season and will look to extend their 13-match win streak against them, dating back to 2018. The winner of the match will play the winner between Genesee and Jefferson for the MSAC Championship at 2 PM.
