Williams' Double-Double Leads Lakers to Conference Win

Williams' Double-Double Leads Lakers to Conference Win

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's basketball team moved to 2-2 Thursday night with a 35-32 conference win over the visiting Genesee Community College Cougars. The game marks the Lakers' second consecutive home and conference win as they move to 2-1 at home and in Mid-State Athletic Conference play.

Freshman Leah Williams (Olean, N.Y./Olean) was the standout player in the tightly contested game as she came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points on 7-for-18 shooting. Williams would go a near-perfect 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Williams dominated the boards, pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds to secure the double-double. Williams would make her presence felt on defense, adding 3 blocks and 3 steals to her tally as well to conclude a well-rounded performance.

Freshman Alissa Mazzye (Oneida, N.Y./Stockbridge Valley) made a significant impact on the game, pulling down 9 rebounds and swiping 2 steals, while teammate Izzy Robson (Newark, N.Y./Newark) set her teammates up with 4 assists while adding a team-high 5 steals to her tally in a strong defensive effort. Freshman Jade Roussell (Dundee, N.Y./Dundee) added 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists to her tally to round out another strong performance on the Putt Moore Court for the Lakers.

A late-game rally by the Cougars was thwarted by strong defensive play from the Lakers to help secure the win. Up next for the squad is another conference matchup, this time with the visiting Red Barons from Corning Community College. The Lakers will welcome the Red Barons to the Putt Moore Court this Saturday, November 18th with a tip-off time scheduled for 1 PM.
