CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Lakers softball has amassed a record of 4-4 over the 8-game stretch, including a sweep over Genesee Community College and splits with their doubleheaders against Mohawk Valley and SUNY Adirondack.
4/8 - Game one vs. Genesee
The Lakers collected 24 hits and 17 RBIs in a high-scoring affair with the Cougars; with the Lakers coming away with a 17-11 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Freshman Cheyenne Cotton (Nunda, N.Y./ Keshequa) led the Lakers with 5 RBIs in the game, going 5-for-5 in the game. Cotton's performance helped earn her NJCAA Region III Athlete of the Week honors.
Four Lakers earned 2 RBI performances including Skyllar Weigert (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua), Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./ Thomas A. Edison), Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./ Red Jacket), Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./ Cobleskill Richmondville) and Haleigh Weyrauch (Deposit, N.Y./ Deposit Hancock).
For Weigert, 3 of her 4 hits would go for doubles, while Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./ Lyndonville) would finish with 2 doubles in the game on a 3-for-5 hitting performance. Freshman Natalie Lecceardone would impress with 2 triples to go along with an out-of-the-park home run for Haleigh Weyrauch to round out the lopsided victory for Lakers softball.
4/8 - Game two vs. Genesee
The Lakers finished the Cougars in 5-innings in a 12-2 finish in game two of the team's doubleheader. The Lakers collected 10 hits with 5 different Lakers picking up RBIs including Ella Lewis, Cheyenne Cotton, Mackenzie Johnson-Boser, Haleigh Weyrauch, and Peyton Cory (Mexico, N.Y./ Mexico).
For the Lakers, Weigert, Cotton, and Johnson-Boser would each double in the matchup while Ella Lewis' single hit in the game would be good for a triple.
4/11 - Game one vs. Corning
The Lakers faced a tall task on the road faced against the #1 Red Barons of Corning Community College. The Lakers would collect 6 hits and score 4 runs against the nationally-ranked Red Barons. Highlighting game one for the Lakers was Cheyenne Cotton with 3 RBIs and a double.
An 8-run second inning for the Red Barons made a comeback bid for the Lakers difficult as the Red Barons would coast to a 14-4 victory in game one.
4/11 - Game two vs. Corning
The two teams posted an identical finish in game two. The Red Barons jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the second inning and never looked back in route to another 14-4 finish.
The Lakers picked up 7 hits on the Red Barons, with Aubrey Roberts leading all hitters with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with 2 RBIs.
4/13 - Game one vs. Mohawk Valley
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead over the Lakers as the Lakers would fall in 5-innings, 10-1. Sophomore shortstop Skyllar Weigert would double, while Mackenzie Johnson-Boser (Dansville, N.Y./ Dansville) would finish 1-for-2 with an RBI.
4/13 - Game two vs. Mohawk Valley
The Lakers found their groove in game two, securing a tight 13-12 victory over the Hawks. The Lakers added 2 runs in the first, countered by 3 runs for the Hawks in the bottom of the inning. The Lakers would drive in 5 runs in the top of the second, however, the Hawks would tie the game 7-7 with a 4-run performance in the bottom of the inning.
The Hawks would take an 11-7 lead heading into the sixth inning after a 3-run fourth and 1-run fifth. The Lakers held strong, holding the Hawks to 1 run through the last two innings. A 5-run sixth and the game-winning run in the top of the seventh pushed the Lakers over the opposition.
Strong hitting for the Lakers helped lead the team over their opposition. Teammates Cheyenne Cotton and Reagan Seelye would each double in the game, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. The difference maker for the Lakers was four out-of-the-park blasts in the matchup for the Lakers with Skyllar Weigert, Cheyenne Cotton, Reagan Seelye, and Haleigh Weyrauch each connecting on home runs.
4/15 - Game one vs. SUNY Adirondack
The Lakers fell to the SUNY Adirondack Wolves in a tight 3-2 finish in game one of their doubleheader. After tacking on 2 runs in the second inning, the Wolves would hold the Lakers scoreless for the remainder of the game, while earning 2 runs in the fourth and a game-winning run in the seventh.
Freshman outfielder Madeline Lerro (Friendship, N.Y./ Friendship drove in the Lakers two runs in the game on a 2 RBI single in the second inning.
4/15 - Game two vs. SUNY Adirondack
The Lakers tied their season series with the Wolves in game two, earning a 4-3 finish. The win was fueled by strong pitching from freshman Aubrey Roberts who allowed only 4 hits, 3 runs, and 2 earned runs over seven innings on the hill. Roberts would strikeout 6 batters to round out a strong day for the freshman pitcher.
Softball earns a break as their next contest will be at home on Saturday, April 22nd against Hudson Valley Community College. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for a 1 PM start.
