The week began on Tuesday, September 10th, as the Red Barons hosted the Genesee Cougars at Corning Community College (CCC) for a key conference match. The home team came out firing on all cylinders, displaying impressive skill and teamwork. However, despite a strong start, they struggled to maintain their momentum, ultimately dropping the first two sets. The third set proved to be a nail-biter, with the Red Barons narrowly falling 24-26. Tae Dukes had a standout performance, leading the team with 7 kills and 1 solo block. Ruth Smith contributed significantly with 8 assists, while Peyton Peters anchored the defense with 11 digs. Harper Hoffman matched Dukes in defensive efforts by contributing 2 block assists, showcasing the Red Barons' collective effort on the court.
Following the tough loss, Corning traveled to Genesee on Saturday, September 14th, to participate in a POD tournament, where they would once again face off against the Cougars. In this rematch, Corning continued to fight but found themselves outmatched, ultimately falling to Genesee in three sets. Rai Fuller emerged as a key player for the Red Barons, tallying 6 kills and 10 digs, while Ruth Smith once again stood out with 10 assists. Maggie McClaren also made her mark, contributing 2 aces to the team's efforts.
Despite the setback against Genesee, the Red Barons rebounded strongly during their second match of the day against Jamestown, claiming victory in three sets. This win was crucial, improving the team's overall record to 3-3 for the season. McClaren continued to shine, leading the team with 6 kills and adding 2 block assists. Ruth Smith's consistent play was highlighted once more as she racked up 11 assists.
