Despite a record-setting effort from Cassie Doane (Candor/Owego Free Academy), the Panthers women's basketball team dropped its final regular season game, 60-48 at Genesee Community College. The Panthers drop to 7-12 overall and 5-8 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Genesee is now 7-17 overall and 4-10 in the MSAC.
The Panthers had the lead early, including 13-6 after the first quarter. The lead slipped away in the second quarter as the Cougars outscored the Panthers by 13 points to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. The gap widened to 20 points in the fourth before the Panthers cut to 12 at the final horn.
As a team the Panthers shot just 32% from the floor, including going 0-for-14 from 3-point range, but were able to stay close thanks to a dominating performance on the glass. Doane collected 31 rebounds, smashing the previous TC3 record of 26 rebounds in a game set by Audrey Kate Ordway in 2012. Combined with her 24 rebound effort earlier this season, Doane now holds two of the top six single-game rebounding performances in program history.
Doane also led the Panthers in scoring on Wednesday, netting 17 points. Michaela Jean-Philippe (Binghamton/Binghamton H.S.) added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Looking ahead
Wednesday's game marks the end of the regular season for the Panthers. The team now waits to hear on a possible NJCAA Region 3 playoff bid. Postseason seedings will be announced on Sunday with playoff games starting on Tuesday.
