
Men's Basketball Secures Important Win On The Road

The Hornets earned a big win as they improved to 4-3 in MSAC play and handed the Cougars just their fifth loss of the season. Coming into the contest, Genesee, which finished 23-7 overall and 13-1 in conference last season, was the #3 team in the latest NJCAA Region 3 Men's Basketball coaches' poll.
SUNY Broome opened the first half on a 13-4 run and held a 32-17 lead with just over five minutes to go in the half. Genesee rallied to come within two points, but the Hornets never relinquished their lead and led 38-36 at the half. The Cougars took a 45-44 lead at the 15:06 mark in the second half, but Broome eventually tied the score at 49-49 and then went back ahead. With under 10 minutes to go in the second, Genesee regained a lead and expanded it to as great as nine points.
In the final three minutes, Broome cut the lead to two points on multiple occasions, 70-68 and 72-70. Down 75-70 with 1:53 to play, the Hornets outscored the Cougars 10-2 to close the game. Antonio Maria made a three-pointer to tie the game at 75-75, and after a Connor Green three-pointer to make it 78-75, SUNY Broome stayed ahead for good.
Maria led the offensive attack with 24 points and Green had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Amauri Truax added 18 points and Antuan Darden had 10 points and five rebounds as four Hornets went for double-digit point totals. Key in this contest was the fact that SUNY Broome shot 75% (15-20) on free-throws while Genesee was limited to 41.2% (7-17) from the line. The Hornets forced 14 turnovers by the Cougars as well.
SUNY Broome improves to 6-9 and 4-3 in conference with the important win. It will travel to Jefferson CC on Wednesday for its next game.
