Baseball Secures a Playoff Spot With Split

BATAVIA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team earned a split of its doubleheader with Genesee Community College Sunday afternoon. The Lakers (19-15) suffered an 8-4 setback in the opener before claiming game two by a 7-6 score vs. the Cougars (10-18).

With the split, the Lakers clinched a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 3 postseason tournament, beginning with the sub-regional, May 8-9.

Game One

The Lakers took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh of the opener before the Cougars answered with three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to earn the win.

Sophomore Lukas Haefner (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) doubled and drove in two runs, freshman Tim McClare (Macedon, NY/Gananda) went 2-for-4 with a double, and sophomore Zach Harter (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored for FLCC.

Freshman Trevor Robinson (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts over seven effective innings pitched.

Game Two

McClare went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base, freshman Alfredo Hurtado (Davie, FL/Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Haefner went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Ryan C. Smith (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to power the Lakers.

Freshman Sean Peck (Dryden, NY/Dryden) earned the win, his first with FLCC, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts over five innings.

FLCC scored a run in both the first and second innings, but GCC responded with three runs in the home half of the third. Trailing 3-2 entering the fifth, the Lakers pushed across three runs, then tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to seize a 7-3 lead.

The Cougars made things interesting by scratching across three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Haefner closed the door on GCC, recording two strikeouts to earn the save.

The Lakers close out the regular season hosting Jamestown Community College on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
