Two or More Cougars Win National Player of the Week Honors for Sixth-Consecutive Week

Genesee Community College athletes continue to impress those across the nation with their efforts during this fall 2018 season.

For the sixth-consecutive week, Genesee Community College has landed at least two national players of the week as recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association that covers more than 150 combined men's and women's soccer teams at the Division-III level.

To date, that brings the total number of accolades nationally to 15 – quite an impressive feat!

With weekly Region-III awards, cougar athletes have been honored 21 times in 10 weeks of action, according to GCC sports information coordinator Mark Jagord.

Today, Sam Hall and Adrian Bergman from the men's soccer team swept the national men's soccer D-III awards as NJCAA D-III Men's Soccer Player of the Week and NJCAA D-III Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.

The pair was instrumental in bringing the GCC men's soccer team another regional championship this past Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Onondaga. The team now prepares to defend its national title in a little over a week at Herkimer.

The previous week saw the Cougars win three national soccer player of the week awards highlighted by two from the women's soccer team. The GCC women's team also captured a regional championship last Sunday with a 2-1 win over Mohawk Valley as the team prepares to travel to Rocford, Ill. for the NJCAA D-III Women's Soccer National Tournament.

A week ago it was Miko Yamashita and Jaclyn Guzdek taking the NJCAA D-III Women's Soccer Player of the Week and NJCAA D-III Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, with men's soccer player Rodrigo Albuquerque also garnering national recognition as the NJCAA D-III Men's Soccer Player of the Week.

Seeding for both national tournaments is due out this week as the Cougars appear to be a top-three seed in both national appearances.
