The Genesee Community College's athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 30 are Julie Kommer (Williamson, NY) from the No. 1 NJCAA D-III ranked women's soccer team and Hijiri Sano (Tokyo, Japan) from the No. 4 NJCAA D-III ranked men's soccer team.
Julie was perhaps the most instrumental player in keeping Genesee undefeated against D-III opponents in women's soccer last week. Against Hudson Valley, she had the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 win Sept. 24 and followed that performance with the team's best defensive save of the season just four days later. In a tied game against No. 2 Erie, the Kats watched in disbelief as Julie came out of nowhere to knock a sure goal out of harm's way from the Cougar goal line, in a game where she also recorded one of the team's nine shots on net Sept. 28.
Hijiri scored three goals against No. 8 Erie in a battle of nationally-ranked teams in NJCAA D-III men's soccer in leading the Cougars to an 8-0 victory Sept. 28 in the team's lone game of the week. The native from Japan has been on fire after recently tying a school record with a five-goal performance against a Niagara that has left Hijiri sharing the team lead in goals with Ryan Price at 10.
